American Dialect Coaching & Training for Actors

Standard American Dialect Intensives offered at Blue Egg assist actors in assuming and maintaining a Standard American accent to perform convincingly for TV or Film productions.

Many accents are very difficult because, in order to sound accurate, the actor has to use muscles in the tongue and mouth that he or she never used before. The coaching can be very similar to that of a gym coach: a muscle is a muscle and training the tongue and the mouth requires warm-ups, exercises and a lot of practice. Dialect coaches are skilled in pronunciation and phonetics (a branch of linguistics). They do not necessarily have to have the accent that they are teaching.

Contrary to popular actors’ belief, mastering the correct pronunciation, like dropping one’s rs, for example, is not enough for an authentic-sounding accent, which is only half of the challenge. Acquiring the correct native pitch, the musicality of the language, is the second and equally important part of the equation.

Dialect training includes sensing the differences between Standard American and Standard Canadian dialects:

* Rhythm
* Pitch
* Vowel Changes
* Specific Pronunciations

Dialect is taught by sought after Dialect coach, Doug Abrahams.

You will be asked to choose a 1-2 minute monologue from a recent American Play or Film that you would like to work on and bring it with you to the first class for approval. You will be expected to memorize your monologue, exactly as written.

Participants: Be prepared to work both in class and between class sessions. Wear loose comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. Layers are advisable. Bring paper, pens and a pencil. Arrive hydrated.

For the Vancouver Film & Television industry, a Standard American Accent is a must due to the volume of US productions that are filmed here. If you are an aspiring or current professional actor, we recommend training in Dialect or employing Triple Threat Training — the ultimate preparation for an actor.

American Dialect is available as either individual Intensive or as part of a Training Program.

Other Dialects are available through private coaching.

Voice & Movement Intensive for Actors

As an actor voice and movement are critical to character and storytelling. Voice is one of your most powerful tools, conveying emotion and the communication necessary for storytelling. Developing a real relationship as an actor to space, location and environment is revealing and guiding to your work in a scene and throughout a story.

This training is lead by Stephen Atkins who has 25 years of experience in teaching voice and movement for the actor.
